Raney Nickel Catalyst Market Reach 739.80 Million USD in 2023 with Growth rate of 2.72%

The Global Raney nickel catalyst market was valued to be 629.64 million USD in 2017 with the production of 27,916 tons. The Raney nickel catalyst production value is anticipated to have a growth with the CAGR of 2.72% in the coming years to reach 739.80 million USD in 2023. The Growth of Raney nickel catalyst Market was mainly drived by  it application in hydrogenation reaction catalyst and desulfurization agent.

Raney Nickel is a solid catalyst composed of fine grains of a nickel-aluminium alloy, used in many industrial processes. It was developed in 1926 by American engineer Murray Raney as an alternative catalyst for the hydrogenation of vegetable oils in industrial processes. More recently it is used as a heterogeneous catalyst in a variety of organic syntheses, most commonly for hydrogenation reactions.[1]

A variety of grades is known, but most are gray solids. Some are pyrophoric; most are used as air-stable slurries. [2] Raney Nickel is produced when a block of nickel-aluminium alloy is treated with concentrated sodium hydroxide. This treatment, called "activation", dissolves most of the aluminium out of the alloy. The porous structure left behind has a large surface area, which gives high catalytic activity. A typical catalyst is around 85-percent nickel by mass, corresponding to about two atoms of nickel for every atom of aluminium.

Grace, BASF, Evonik, Haldor Topsoe, Johnson Matthey, Axens and Xinyijin Toyounger are the major international players in the market of Raney nickel catalyst industry. The reason why these companies dominate the market is their production technological advantages, their long-term presence in the market, the relationships they have developed with downstream users over a long period of time and the brand name recognition they enjoy.

 Raney nickel catalyst market Challenges:

1 There is certain environmental pollution in the nickel production process of Raney nickel catalyst. The operating rate and production cost will inevitably be affected by the environmental policy, especially in China.

2 As the main raw material of the Raney nickel catalyst, the supply and price of nickel may affect the Raney nickel catalyst market.

3 There may be certain brand effect in the Raney nickel catalyst market, and the end users typically maintain a long-term and stable cooperative relationship with upstream suppliers, which is not conducive to other producers to develop new customers.

4 Fluctuation of the United States dollar and other foreign currencies may affect the competitiveness of domestic manufacturers.

5 The development of Raney nickel catalyst industry may be negatively affected by many unpredictable factors such as strengthening government regulations, elevating product qualities, price fluctuations, and trade protections.

Further key findings from the study suggest:

1 Raney nickel catalyst is widely applied in many kinds of catalytic hydrogenation and desulfurization process, which will further increase the consumption of Raney nickel catalyst.

2 China has mastered the production technology of fixed bed Raney nickel catalyst and foreign companies may raise their purchase share in China due to the advantage of production cost.

3 Although there are some alternatives, the relatively low price makes Raney nickel catalyst more competitive.

4 Currently, as the manufacturing technologies of Raney nickel catalyst become increasingly mature, the production costs of high-quality Raney nickel catalyst will decrease.

In the end, although there are a lot of opportunities in the Raney nickel catalyst industry, Prof Research team recommends that new manufacturers who don’t have either technical advantages or downstream demand support to be extremely discreet when deciding getting into this industry.

Raney nickel catalyst Application Outlook (Revenue, USD Million, 2013 - 2023)

  • Industrial

A practical example of the use of Raney nickel catalyst in industry is shown in the following reaction, where benzene is reduced to cyclohexane. The cyclohexane thus produced may be used in the synthesis of adipic acid, a raw material used in the industrial production of polyamides such as nylon.

  • Organic Synthesis

    1) Desulfurization

Raney nickel catalyst is used in organic synthesis for desulfurization. For example, thioacetals will be reduced to hydrocarbons in the last step of the Mozingo reduction.

    2) Reduction of functional groups

It is typically used in the reduction of compounds with multiple bonds, such as alkynes, alkenes, nitriles, dienes, aromatics and carbonyl-containing compounds.
